Preschool Teacher Bilingual-Engl/Span(East Palo Alto, CA)

10Books A Home (10BH), an early education nonprofit founded in 2009 to end highpoverty

Field: Early Childhood Education

Educational Approach:Intrinsic Learning Motivation (ILM)

INTRINSIC LEARNING MOTIVATION: Leading research in the fields of geneticsand neuroscience agree that a more effective method of educating children inthe future will be able to recognize and build on the unique cognitive andmotivational predispositions of each individual personalized education foreach individual. 10BH s education method, Intrinsic Learning Motivation, isbringing the future to the present by standardizing the personalization oflearning in the early childhood education space. In other words, we teach tothe child.

SOLUTION: Since 2011, 10BH has run aninnovative home tutoring program, Intrinsic Learning Motivation (ILM) Program, forhigh-poverty preschoolers who live in communities where rates of povertyand school failure are higher than all other school communities in the U.S. The ILM Programidentifies what children naturally love to learn about (intrinsic learningmotivations (ILMs)) and designs tutoring lessons to cultivate their love oflearning. The cultivation of what children love to learn about happens yearround with parent participation for the two years children are enrolled untilthey graduate and begin kindergarten.

HOW YOU CAN HELP US: 10BH is in an exciting phase ofexpanding its Intrinsic Learning Motivation Program to three additional SF BayArea locations over the next five years. To support our educational vision we are looking for Preschool Teachersto staff our ILM Program. Preschool Teachers will report directly to the ProgramDirector, work directly with the Founder & CEO and make contributions tothe marketing, fundraising, and research team. Preschool Teachers will also besupported by a growing team of ECE student interns. The position is based inour East Palo Alto site. Positions in 10BH s East San Jose site will beavailable in late 2018.

WHY WORK FOR US: 10BH has developed an innovative educationalmethodology (ILM) to ready high poverty preschoolers for long-term academicsuccess. Our current data show we are succeeding with flying colors:

1.Childrenenter our program 3 months developmentally delayed

2.Childrenin our program outperform their preschool peers (general and special needs)

3.Childrenstart and graduate kindergarten at/above grade level

4.All threegroups of our graduates have remained at/above grade level (in reading and mathand 10 other subjects)

Help Us EstablishLeadership in ILM

We want to take our ILM Program tothe next level by staffing it with ECE professionals who:

1.haveworked with preschoolers in a preschool setting

2.understandthe fundamental importance of parent involvement during the early years

3.have theexperience and education needed to appreciate and offer improvements to a noveleducational methodology

10BH s Educational Vision

10BH s impact is based on our ILMmethod, a new educational approach developed by our founder that is based onthe brain. What we mean operationally by brain is that children will spendmuch more time learning intensely (using their brain) when they areintrinsically motivated (when their brain devotes its energy to processing andcomputing information) rather than when children are required to learnsomething (behaviorally, they may do what is instructed, but their brains will not).In other words, a child may behaviorally follow directions and practice skillsas instructed, but if the child is naturally uninterested in the subjectmatter, her brain will concentrate on something else. When a child s braindoesn t want to do something, she will learn less, remember less, andultimately develop weaker values for what is being taught. If, on the otherhand, a child s brain is interested in what is being taught, her brain willdevote much of its energies to learning, remembering, and developing strongervalues for what is being taught. While other educational approaches such asMontessori, Reggio Emila, and Play-based Learning have similarities to ILM,they differ in at least one fundamental way: they adhere to state/federal/localeducational mandates that children are expected to develop within. ILM buildscurriculum based on each child s intrinsic learning motivations regardless ofeducational mandates. We believe that children will learn far more thanexpected (in other words, we think children s potential is undervalued) ifgiven the chance to develop skills, knowledge, abilities, and values based ontheir unique learning motivations. So far, our results support our beliefs.
