Merck is on a quest for cures and is committed to being the world's premier, most research:intensive biopharmaceutical company. Today, we're doubling down on this goal. Merck Research Laboratories is a true scientific research facility of tomorrow, and will take Merck's leading discovery capabilities and world:class small molecule and biologics R and D expertise to create breakthrough science that radically changes the way we approach serious diseases.
We are looking for an experienced hands:on manager in protein purification to join the Protein Sciences group at the Merck Biologics unit in Palo Alto.
The successful candidate will manage a group of 3:4 scientists to purify and characterize a variety of reagent and therapeutic candidate proteins including recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, and antibody scaffolds (eg bispecifics antibodies) to support the preclinical development of biopharmaceutical programs across multiple therapeutic areas.
Candidates must have solid experience in all aspects of column chromatography, protein purification and purification process development and optimization demonstrated by publications and meeting presentations.
The successful candidate will be expected to be hands on in the lab, purify proteins and demonstrate technical leadership in the laboratory, oversee and delegate experimental/project responsibilities, independently champion technology development projects, be involved in new product evaluation, and definition of process platforms. The successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of complex problems, requiring the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
Candidates must have deep and broad knowledge of protein analytical technology including chromatographic and biophysical characterization methods such as HPLC (SEC,IEX, RP), capillary electrophoresis, IEF, dynamic and static light scattering.
The candidate must have strong expertise in high:throughput protein and antibody purification platforms and automation (eg. Tecan) to support antibody discovery, optimization, and technology development.
This individual is expected to be a critical member of the Biologics Discovery team and will be required to represent Protein Sciences in project teams and possibly serve as a Biologics team lead.
: PhD in biochemical/chemical engineering or a closely related discipline with a minimum of 8 years of related experience in industry and or academia
: Solid, proven hands on experience in column chromatography, protein purification method development and optimization
: Deep and broad knowledge of protein analytical assays including chromatographic and biophysical characterization methods such as HPLC (SEC, IEX, RP), capillary electrophoresis, IEF, dynamic and static light scattering,
: Up:to:date on advanced technologies for downstream processing and actively apply new concepts as appropriate to continuously improve functional area capabilities.
: Previous experience managing direct reports with a proven track record of developing careers
