“Musical Box” demonstrations, August 30 – September 2

The public is invited to share the pleasures of machines that actually play music, as distinct from playing recordings, during the Musical Box Society Int'l (MBSI) annual meeting at Redwood City’s Sofitel Hotel, August 30 – September 2. “Musical boxes” are automata, from small windup music boxes and tiny birds in gilded cages to fairground organs and calliopes, that for centuries held a special place in the world before electronic technology made “music on demand” available to all. There will be a public display of many automatic musical instruments in the Sofitel’s Veranda Room, from 9 am to 7 pm. Docents will play the instruments on request. The highlight performance will be an old-fashioned organ rally outside the hotel, Saturday, September 2, 5 – 8 pm, including “monkey organs.” (No monkeys provided—bring your own.)
